I think I worked from 2pm – 9pm as I can remember running down the front steps in to Doncaster Gate and round into All Saints Square to catch the last bus at 9pm. The kitchen staff brought me my meals on a tray into the office so I felt very grown up. I cannot remember leaving the small office, which was situated just inside the front main office, except for taking fruit for the patients, which was left with me by relatives, up to the wards as there was no visiting on Thursday or Sunday.
The German’s dropped bombs in Clifton Park and the High School playing fields during the fortnight I was working there. I cannot remember any casualties, but I had to deal with a lot of calls from anxious people living miles away who had relatives living in the Rotherham area.
When the Manager gave me my wages, one pound five shillings for the fortnight, he said that he has a job for me in the main office and was very disappointed when I said the I couldn’t take it as my Father had signed an agreement for me to stay at school till I was sixteen.
